We want to tell the world about all the
X-treme Tweens!
Maybe that means YOU!
When you combine a dream with a purpose that goes beyond yourself - it is amazing what you can accomplish - and how many people you can help!
It all started when Katie was 10 years old (she is now 11). Katie entered a contest that has been running for over 9 years by the Bonnie Seed Company. Chances are if you, your parents, grandparents or anyone you know has a garden - they know about Bonnie seeds.
Each year the company distributes over one million cabbage plants to third grade students across the county. The tweens plant the seedlings. And the tween who grows the biggest cabbage in their state wins $1,000 to go towards their education. Last year the Bonnie Seed Company gave out $43,000.
In Katie's case, the seedling she planted was about more than growing a cabbage. Katie planted a seed for her dream. Katie believes that there is no reason that a child should go to bed hungry. Especially in a country as great as America. And that is Katie's dream.
She planted her cabbage seedling, watered and looked after it faithfully every day in the backyard of her home in Summerville, South Carolina. When wandering deer started eyeing her prize - she and her grandfather built a wire cage to protect it.
Katie's cabbage grew. And grew. And grew, to finally weigh in at a whopping 40 pounds!
Yes, you're right. Katie won $1,000 from the Bonnie Seed Company for growing the biggest cabbage in South Carolina!
Katie and her classmates now have a garden and continue to feed the hungry at soup kitchens. She designed "No Hungry Children" t-shirts to help provide money for her garden project.
That is what Katie Stagliano did to make a wonderful tween dream come true!
She talked things over with her mom and dad. They decided that a cabbage so special needed to be used for something special.
Katie's cabbage fed 275 people!
Thank you, Katie! We know your story will inspire others. Keep making your tween dreams come true.
"Growing vegetables is fun and it is so great to help people. If I can do it, anyone can. Somehow, when you do something for someone else that's good - it almost feels like you're the one who got the gift. Try it - you'll see, " says Katie.
So her mom contacted the Fields to Family organization. They help farmers provide food to feed the hungry. They put Katie in touch with Tri County Family Ministries, a local soup kitchen nearby. Katie brought them the cabbage. She noticed a very long line of people waiting to be fed what could be there only meal that day.
Katie grew a cabbage that weighed 40 pounds
and fed hundreds!
